Chief Program Officer at The Bronx Defenders

Reporting to the Executive Director (ED), and working closely with the Chief Operating Officer (COO) and General Counsel, the Chief Program Officer (CPO) will be a key member of the executive management team.

The CPO will be responsible for leadership in the following areas:
  • The Holistic Model: Implementing and overseeing the coordination, integration, and delivery of all direct representation legal services (criminal, family, immigration, civil, and social work), ensuring that practices continue to reflect the holistic model as the organization grows and developing the model consistent with the organization’s mission and client needs. Directly supervise and support the Managing Directors and the interdisciplinary Team Leaders, determining staffing plans and team assignments. Streamline and systematize processes to achieve program objectives.
  • People and Culture: Ensuring that systems are in place for strong staff engagement, satisfaction, performance, training, and professional development. Working with the management team to maintain clear, consistent processes related to hiring, performance evaluations, compensation, and promotions, and that every manager and supervisor has the tools and training to be effective. Approaching staff performance and office culture with a focus on getting results while maintaining strong relationships, a commitment to staff development and organizational mission, and advancing equity and inclusion.
  • Strategy Implementation: In coordination with the ED and executive team, play a key role in the overall development, service delivery, and management of the organization. Under the advisement of the Board and in partnership with the ED, COO, and other key members of executive management, implement strategic plans and new initiatives that reflect the organization’s mission and vision. Work with the ED and Managing Directors to develop and assess annual program goals and objectives.
  • Contract Oversight and Reporting: Overseeing the delivery of services and compliance with contract and grant requirements for direct legal representation programs, producing timely, accurate, and useful reports for funders, foundations, senior leadership, and the Board of Directors. With the Managing Directors, represent The Bronx Defenders in negotiating government contracts. Review and supervise data collection and case management systems.
  • Finance: Work closely with the COO, finance department, and Managing Directors to develop program budgets, maximize the impact and efficiency of office-wide spending to meet budget and program objectives, and monitor program operations to ensure sound fiscal management and proper resource allocation across practices and programs.
  • Development: Work with the Director of Strategic Partnerships and key staff to maintain and strengthen program funding through effective resource stewardship; identity, develop, and draft funding proposals; respond to requests for proposals and applications; and follow through on funding opportunities. Assess practice and cross-practice needs to provide guidance to the ED concerning funding priorities.
